This video/performance project was created for a specific venue that has a white box four wall screening/dining room within a fully equip restaurant. Rehearsed Reverse is a video work that documents the preparation of a four-course meal and that footage is regularly interrupted by pivotal dramatic scenes taken from a Bollywood action musical. As the finished courses appear on screen, the plated food, identical to what is seen on the video, is presented to each person in the audience by a trained team of servers. In the video that course is then “un-prepared” or shown being prepared backwards, the video footage is played in reverse, and the audience witnesses the deconstruction of the dish they are eating. Conversely the overly dramatic and action-packed (often violent) narrative of the Bollywood musical, the lead character of which is a chef, unfolds in forward linear motion.
